Boston Red Sox right fielder Wilyer Abreu has unleashed his mastery against left-handed pitchers this season. The 26-year-old is batting .411 with a home run and 11 RBI across 82 plate appearances against southpaws this season. 

He is also boasting a .991 OPS, .457 OBP, slugging percentage of .534 along with six doubles and 30 hits across 73 at-bats against southpaws. 

That's a significant boost from 2024, when he was batting .180 with a .532 OPS against them. Last season, he showed some improvement hitting .230 with a .676 OPS.

Normally recognized as a pull-heavy hitter, he made a significant adjustment to his swing during the offseason. He trained vigorously by taking on a more disciplined approach when faced with breaking balls.

How Wilyer Abreu has been so dominant against lefties

Gaining veteran mentorship from outfielder Gerardo Parra who helped him modify his approach when faced with lefties. On the season, Abreu is hitting .283 with seven home runs, 29 RBI and a .776 OPS. 

Rather than swinging early, which results in weak contact, he's delayed his swing, which has transformed his platoon weakness. Ultimately, it has allowed him to find his rhythm at the plate, where he has produced more consistent contact by pulling more balls to the middle of the field.

Getting more consistent playing time has allowed him to regain his confidence and not be restricted to a platoon role, transforming into an everyday player who has turned his former weakness into an asset. 

In the Red Sox's 5-3 victory over the New York Yankees on Friday, Abreu went 1-for-3 with an RBI groundout in the top of the third against lefty Ryan Weathers (and went 1-for-4 overall). Abreu was able to score teammate Connor Wong by hitting a sinker that reached an exit velocity of 101.1 mph. 

Overall, his breakout against lefties has made his bat more potent in the Red Sox lineup.
