As the Boston Red Sox's win streak reached 12 games, an unlikely hero emerged as the main reason they've been the hottest team in baseball lately. 

Red Sox right fielder Wilyer Abreu went yard twice in Boston's 7-6 win over the American League East-leading Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday night. He hit a solo with two outs already on the board in the third inning and then slugged a two-run blast in the seventh.

Abreu's multi-homer game was also a sense of deja vu, too. 

Abreu's pair of home runs and three RBIs in the third game of a four-game series with Tampa Bay came a day after he put up the same production in the second game of a doubleheader on Friday. 

Abreu can make more history in Boston's next game

With now 15 home runs on the year, Abreu, in the midst of his fourth season in Boston, became the first Red Sox player with consecutive multi-homer games since Mookie Betts in 2016.

While improbable, he now has a chance at joining a short list and making MLB history on Sunday. 

If he can send two more balls over the fence again in the series finale, Abreu will become only the fifth player to ever record three-straight multi-homer games and the first since 2003. The current four are Jeff DaVanon (2003), Lee May (1969), Frank Thomas (1962) and Gus Zernial (1951). 

Abreu is enjoying a career year

But regardless if (and when) Abreu cools off, he's putting together a career season. He has 15 home runs, 49 RBIs, 49 runs scored and 20 doubles with a slash line of .266/.338/.462 through 95 games and 364 at-bats, placing him just eight home runs and 21 RBIs away from setting new career-highs. His slash line would be his best since his MLB debut year in 2023, granted that was only in 28 games.
