The Tampa Bay Rays held their breath when slugger Junior Caminero exited Tuesday's All-Star Game in the top of the third inning after his left hand was struck by a pitch thrown by St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Riley O'Brien.

Following the American League's 4-0 win at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, ESPN's Jorge Castillo revealed that X-rays on Caminero's hand were negative.

"I felt a little scared," Caminero said in Spanish about the seriousness of the potential injury. "I said, 'Wow, I think something is broken.' Because in the moment, you think about bad things. But, thank God, everything is fine. A little sore, but nothing. Ready for Friday."

The 56-38 Rays open a four-game series at the rival Boston Red Sox (46-48) with a doubleheader on Friday. 

Caminero was in the cleanup spot for the American League's starting lineup on Tuesday. He grounded out in his only other at-bat of the evening amid what became a three-run first inning for the AL.

Meanwhile, O'Brien completed a scoreless inning in the first All-Star Game appearance of his career. He later visited with Caminero in the AL clubhouse and apologized for the unintentional plunking. 

"He was very worried," Caminero said about his chat with O'Brien. "I told him, 'No, that's part of the game.' I'm very happy because he came here to the All-Star Game, and he's very deserving. And that's part of the game. He shouldn't feel bad. I'm proud of him, and everything is fine."

ESPN stats show that Caminero entered the All-Star break tied for fourth in all of MLB with 28 home runs. Over 94 games, he hit .279 with 59 RBI and a .927 OPS. 

Of course, it was too early to guess whether or not Caminero will play against the Red Sox on Friday or be held out of those games as a precaution. That said, it sounds like he and the Rays dodged what could have been a major setback.
