If the Tampa Bay Rays are going to win their first World Series title, they will have to do so without Shane McClanahan.

Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reported that McClanahan has been declared out for the rest of the postseason. He had not pitched since Sept. 3, landing on the Injured List with left forearm tightness. McClanahan also missed time in August with back tightness.

Injuries are nothing new for McClanahan as he missed the previous two seasons due to Tommy John surgery and a nerve issue in his left triceps. He was effective when he was on the mound in 2026, posting a 3.36 ERA and a 1.119 WHIP over his 118 innings, striking out 106 batters with 39 walks.

Tampa Bay Rays have strong rotation, but losing Shane McClanahan hurts

While McClanahan has not suffered a setback, it is simply a matter of running out of time. He has been able to play catch since the end of September, but does not have the time needed to return to game shape. Instead, the Rays will look to have McClanahan back and ready to go in time for spring training.

The Rays still have a solid rotation heading into the ALCS against the Guardians. Drew Rasmussen, Nick Martinez and the resurgent Freddy Peralta are a respectable trio. However, losing McClanahan leads to a question mark as the Rays' fourth starter. Ian Seymour and Griffin Jax have filled in well during the season, but neither has an extensive track record as a starting pitcher. It may not be a surprise to see the Rays use a bullpen game in Game 4, with either Jax or Seymour serving as a bulk reliever.
