In a past interview, Hamed was asked to name boxing’s greatest fighter and did not hesitate.

“It’s either Sugar Ray Robinson or Muhammad Ali. They’re just set in stone. That will never change,” said Hamed to Radio Raheem.

“In my eyes, though, the [most intelligent] person to ever come into the boxing game is Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather.”

While Hamed praised Mayweather’s ring IQ, he stopped short of placing the unbeaten five-division champion alongside Ali and Robinson in the GOAT discussion.

For many boxing historians, Robinson’s case is built on accomplishments that modern fans rarely hear about because most of his career unfolded during the 1940s and 1950s.

Robinson dominated the welterweight division to such an extent that his resume at 147 pounds alone would rank among the greatest careers in boxing history. He then moved up and built a second Hall of Fame career as a middleweight, winning the world title multiple times and defeating an extraordinary number of elite opponents over two decades.

His rivalry with Jake LaMotta produced six fights, with Robinson winning five. He also defeated 10 future Hall of Famers during a professional career that ended with a remarkable record of 174-19-6 with 109 knockouts.

Ali’s legacy extends far beyond the ring, with legendary victories over George Foreman, Joe Frazier, Sonny Liston and Ken Norton, as well as his influence on sport and society. But when the debate is limited strictly to in-ring accomplishments, Robinson remains the fighter many historians, trainers and former champions still place at the very top.

That helps explain why, despite generations of fans never seeing him fight live, Robinson’s name continues to surface whenever boxing’s greatest-ever debate begins.
