Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayThe weight clause initially floated as part of the Detroit Pistons' five-year, $200 million offer to Jalen Duren is no longer on the table ahead of Thursday's deadline.
The offer, which Duren has not yet accepted, is fully guaranteed and contains no weight-related terms.
Duren faces an 11:59 p.m. ET deadline Thursday in which he must accept the $200 million deal, or sign a one-year, $9.6 million qualifying offer, which would make him an unrestricted free agent next summer.
Duren is eligible for up to a five-year, $287 million max contract. Securing a four-year max deal elsewhere next summer would earn him slightly more than $200 million over the next five seasons. But that path is unprecedented for a player of his standing and would carry significant risk.
Duren and his camp reacted poorly to the weight discussions broached by the Pistons. Removing the request could improve the tone of negotiations.
Detroit continues to rebuff sign-and-trade inquiries from rival teams. The Sacramento Kings and Milwaukee Bucks are among the clubs with serious interest. However, the Kings have not spoken with the Pistons on a Duren deal since late June.
Pistons president of basketball operations Trajan Langdon expressed strong confidence at Monday's media day that Duren will play for Detroit this season. Langdon sees the only remaining question as which deal the center chooses.
Langdon praised Duren's contributions to the franchise.
"We will be excited to have him in, regardless of what decision he does make," said Langdon. "He was a huge reason for our success the last two seasons, had a tremendous season individually - last year as well. We believe he will do the same thing this year upcoming, and are excited to have him back when he gets back."
