First baseman Ty France put up a productive first-half performance for the San Diego Padres, whose bat became vital when Jake Cronenworth landed on the injury list on May 5. 

Across 229 plate appearances in the first half of the season, he recorded a .267/.490/.349 slash line with a .349 wOBA, a 124 wRC+, 11 home runs, and 33 RBI. 

He came up clutch and powered against the Toronto Blue Jays (his former team) on Saturday, by crushing his 11th home run in the bottom of the eighth inning. It was the game-winning run that led the Padres to an 8-7 victory. 

In the series, his offense was no match for the Blue Jays pitching. He went 5-for-9 (.556) with three RBI and two extra-base hits, reminding them of who they let go. As well, on Sunday, he hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth to provide the Padres with a 5-4 lead, which was also the game-winning run. 

Ty France deserves more recognition

France was originally drafted by the Padres in 2015 as a 34th-round draft pick. He then earned his first All-Star nod in 2022 with the Seattle Mariners, as well as his first AL Gold Glove Award in 2025, following his strong defensive performance with the Minnesota Twins. 

Following his brief stint with the Blue Jays in 2025, France elected free agency and signed with the Padres in the offseason. Returning in brown and gold, France has sported a solid .490 slugging percentage, with a 47.1 % hard hit rate that ranks in the 81st percentile. His defensive fielding has continued to be an upside with a six Outs Above Average (OAA) that sits in the 94th percentile. 

There's no question that France has proved how efficient he's been when it comes to producing in high-leverage situations, whose power has been an uplifting surprise for the Padres this season. In his last 15 games, he has logged an impressive .340 batting average with a 1.010 OPS, and he will be looking to carry the momentum into the second half of this season.
