Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwaySan Diego Padres closer Mason Miller is generating a great deal of interest on the trade front. However, another reliever may be on the move ahead of the Aug. 3 trade deadline instead.
Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic reported that the Cubs are interested in Padres reliever Adrian Morejon. Insider Francys Romero added three more teams to Morejon's market - the Pittsburgh Pirates, Tampa Bay Rays and New York Yankees.
The Yankees and Pirates made a trade on Saturday, with reliever Camilo Doval heading to Pittsburgh. Both teams still need to address their bullpen, with the Yankees moving a disappointing asset to the Pirates.
San Diego Padres reliever Adrian Morejon could be best reliever moved ahead of trade deadline
Morejon has been a solid part of the Padres bullpen this season. He entered Sunday with a 3.07 ERA and a 1.091 WHiP over his 58.2 innings, striking out 67 batters with 15 walks. Opponents have posted a meager .221/.278/.288 batting line against Morejon in 241 plate appearances.
The Padres could decide to hold on to Morejon. They have a 7-3 record in their last 10 games and are only one game out of the final wild-card berth.
Nonetheless, general manager A.J. Preller has displayed a willingness to listen on any player if he can improve the Padres chances of building a sustained contender. Morejon, as a highly desirable lefty reliever on an expiring contract, could be more valuable as a trade chip than he is for the Padres bullpen.
