Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayDan Rafael reported Wednesday that a source confirmed Osleys Iglesias will defend his IBF super middleweight title against Oliver Zaren on October 8 in Canada. A venue was not disclosed.
Iglesias (15-0, 14 KOs) captured the vacant belt on April 9 in Montreal, stopping Pavel Silyagin in round eight. The Cuban power puncher has knocked out 14 of his 15 professional opponents and has quickly become a dangerous presence at 168 pounds.
Oliver Zaren (19-0-1, 8 KOs) lacks major name recognition, though he owns the IBF Intercontinental title and is ranked No. 5 by the organization. The 26-year-old Dane fought Jose Luis Navarro Jr. in June, a bout in Spain that ended in a no-contest after a thunderstorm forced the action to be halted.
Zaren spent almost his entire seven-year professional career fighting in Denmark before that trip. Iglesias represents a major step up in opposition.
The matchup keeps Iglesias active while the bigger names at super middleweight pursue other fights. Christian Mbilli defends his WBC belt against Canelo Alvarez on October 31, three weeks after Iglesias faces Zaren.
Osleys has struggled to secure a major opponent despite his knockout run. With the division’s better-known champions and contenders committed elsewhere, Zaren gives him a title defense without forcing him to wait several more months for another opportunity.
The bigger fights remain the goal at 168 pounds, and Zaren isn’t the type of opponent who will satisfy that demand. Another quick knockout would at least strengthen Iglesias’ argument for a unification fight next.
