“Why not?” Usyk told The Athletic. “If Deontay’s team wants it, I do it. Money, business… now we have two options, but what for me is good, we will take.”

Usyk did not identify the second option his team is considering. Former UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones has previously been mentioned, but Usyk gave little indication that fight will happen.

His wife and team do not want him competing against Jones under MMA rules, while Usyk has no interest in facing Jones in a boxing match. That leaves the identity of the second candidate unknown.

Wilder, 40, gives Usyk a familiar American name for what may be his final fight. The former WBC heavyweight champion held the title for five years and built a large following during his championship run.

Retirement may not be permanent. Usyk referenced Tyson Fury’s history of leaving boxing and returning while discussing how difficult it is for a fighter to declare his career finished.

Usyk also admitted that years of training and fighting have taken a physical toll.

“When you spend a lot of time at work, your body is tired. Me also. I’m not made of iron, I am not an alien. I have a family, my sons, my daughters,” Usyk said.

Usyk defeated Rico Verhoeven in May in Giza and is now deciding what comes next. Wilder is one of two options for what Usyk believes will be his final fight, with the identity of the other candidate still unknown.
