Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayO’Shaquie Foster finally has the unification fight he has been pushing for. The WBC super featherweight champion has agreed to terms to face WBO and IBF champion Emanuel Navarrete on October 24 at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
For Foster, this is an opportunity to do more than collect two additional titles. A win over Navarrete would separate him from the rest of the division and strengthen his case as the best fighter at 130 pounds. Chris Mannix broke the news of the Navarrete-Foster fight.
Navarrete presents an unusual test because very little about his offense looks conventional. He attacks from odd positions, throws punches from different angles, and is comfortable turning fights into prolonged exchanges. That style has repeatedly given cleaner opponents trouble technically because they never get the predictable rhythm they want.
Foster will need to prevent that kind of fight from developing. His advantage is accuracy and defense, and Navarrete’s willingness to throw should provide countering opportunities. The danger is allowing Navarrete to work while waiting too long for the perfect opening. Foster cannot afford to surrender rounds simply because Navarrete is producing more offense.
There is risk on the other side as well. Navarrete has been able to overwhelm many opponents with his activity, but Foster is capable of making aggressive fighters miss and forcing them to start questioning their attacks. Navarrete may find that throwing punches in bunches comes with a higher price against a counterpuncher of Foster’s quality.
Navarrete captured the IBF title to go with his WBO belt by stopping Eduardo Nunez in the 11th round in February. Foster retained his WBC championship with a majority decision over Raymond Ford in May.
Three of the four major super featherweight titles will be at stake in San Antonio. After years in which the champions at 130 pounds rarely came together, Emanuel Navarrete and O’Shaquie Foster now have a chance to reduce the division to one dominant champion and leave only the WBA belt outside the winner’s collection.
