AJ Williams, the top-ranked player in the class of 2028, plans to reclassify into the 2027 class, he told ESPN Tuesday. Williams, currently No. 1 in his original class, will slot in at No. 7 in the 2027 SC Next 100 rankings.

"I put in the hard work, and felt ready to accelerate the process," Williams told ESPN. "I saw this summer, when I moved up to 17U, that I was ready to play with the 2027's and was one of the best in their class too."

Williams, a 6-foot-7 shooting guard from Eagles Landing Christian Academy in Georgia, delivered a standout summer on the Nike EYBL circuit with CP3 after moving up from the 16U division. He was the only player at Peach Jam to average 20 points and eight rebounds while shooting 80 percent from the free throw line, according to Cerebro Sports.

Williams previously won a gold medal with Team USA at the 2025 FIBA AmeriCup and captured the 15U Nike EYBL Peach Jam title with the Georgia Stars, performances that helped him claim the No. 1 spot in the 2028 class last August. Having turned 17 on June 28, Williams will now be eligible for the 2028 NBA draft and is projected as a potential lottery pick.

Williams is currently considering nine schools: Duke, North Carolina, Auburn, BYU, UConn, Georgia, Illinois, Georgia Tech and Mississippi State. He plans to schedule official visits this fall.

Williams' reclassification opens the door for a new top prospect in the 2028 class, with Yann Kamagate, previously ranked No. 2, moving into the No. 1 spot. The 7-foot-1 center from Saint Francis in California combines elite athleticism with true center size, offering strong rebounding, finishing and rim protection ability. Kamagate currently holds offers from North Carolina, Baylor, UCLA, Kansas, USC, Duke, Alabama, Houston, Texas A&M, Arizona, Creighton, Nebraska, Washington and others.
