Nicolas Batum announced his retirement Monday in a social media video featuring his 10-year-old son, Ayden. The 37-year-old spent 18 seasons in the NBA and 15 with the French national team before deciding to step away from the game.

"Yeah, that's it," said Batum. "Dad's done playing basketball. I've been playing for a long time. Twenty years as a pro. That's a lot. Eighteen years in the NBA. Fifteen with the French national team. It's over."

Batum spent most of the past six seasons with the LA Clippers, including a 2025-26 campaign in which he averaged 4.0 points and 2.5 rebounds across 74 appearances. The 2008 first-round pick began his career with the Portland Trail Blazers before later stints with the Charlotte Hornets and a brief run with the Philadelphia 76ers during the 2023-24 season.

Batum explained his decision to retire in personal terms, emphasizing a desire to spend more time with his son.

"I decided to retire from basketball for several reasons," Batum told Ayden in the video. "I want to come home and be with you. I'm going to take care of you and make room for others. I think I've done my time. My time with France ended two years ago. And the NBA is over too. You know, when you've played as much basketball as I have, at some point, you have to know when to stop."

Over his career, Batum posted averages of 9.6 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game while shooting 37.1 percent from three-point range. He appeared in 76 career playoff games and reached the Western Conference finals with the Clippers in 2021.

Batum was also a fixture for the French national team, helping the country win silver medals at the 2020 and 2024 Olympics alongside longtime teammates Rudy Gobert and Evan Fournier. Batum also earned bronze medals at the 2014 and 2019 FIBA World Cups and medaled at three separate EuroBasket tournaments.

Batum cited France's 2024 Olympic semifinal win over Germany in Paris as the most meaningful moment of his career.

"The best basketball moment I've ever experienced," said Batum.

The Clippers declined their $5.9 million option on Batum's contract for the 2026-27 season earlier this summer, leaving him as an unrestricted free agent before his retirement announcement.
