Newcastle United have identified Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha as a leading candidate to replace Bruno Guimarães, who is closing in on a move to Arsenal.

The Magpies urgently need a midfielder capable of carrying possession, covering ground and contributing at both ends of the pitch.

Their window has already seen major players leave, with Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali sold before Guimarães’ expected departure.

Although those deals have generated significant funds, losing three influential starters would leave new coach Matthias Jaissle overseeing a major rebuild.

Nmecha could become an important part of that process, but competition from Manchester United may complicate negotiations.

Dortmund star becomes priority for Newcastle United

According to L’Équipe, Newcastle have been tracking Nmecha for several weeks and accelerated their interest after reaching an agreement to sell Guimarães.

Initial discussions with Borussia Dortmund have already taken place, allowing the Magpies to understand the German club’s financial expectations.

Nmecha is under contract until 2030, meaning Dortmund have no immediate need to sell cheaply.

Newcastle nevertheless view the German international as an attractive option because he can operate as a deeper midfielder or push forward as a No.8.

His athleticism, ability to progress possession and experience in high-intensity matches would help replace some of the qualities being lost with Guimarães.

The Times reports that Arsenal’s £75 million agreement should provide Newcastle with money to reinvest, although replacing their captain’s leadership and creativity will require more than one signing.

Magpies could be involved in bidding war with Man United

Man United’s interest represents the biggest threat to Newcastle’s plans.

The Old Trafford club also want another versatile midfielder and could offer Nmecha the opportunity to return to England, where he previously developed in Manchester City’s academy.

That competition may encourage Dortmund to demand a higher fee or wait for formal proposals from both clubs.

It could also force Newcastle to move quickly rather than spending weeks negotiating while their midfield remains seriously weakened.

Nmecha would be a sensible replacement, but he should not be expected to reproduce everything Guimarães provided immediately.

The Magpies need his physicality and versatility, yet they may also require a more creative midfielder alongside him.

Newcastle should make a serious offer, but they must avoid being pulled into an excessive auction simply because Man United are involved.
