Newcastle United are determined to sign Marcos Senesi, with the defender set to leave AFC Bournemouth this summer.

Bournemouth are still hoping the Argentinian will change his mind and commit to a contract extension at the Vitality Stadium, with Andoni Iraola's side making a shock push for Champions League qualification, sitting in sixth place ahead of the final two games of the season.

The centre-back rakes in £50k-a-week at the Vitality Stadium, and the Cherries are preparing a fresh contract proposal in a desperate attempt to convince him to stay, but it is looking increasingly likely he will move on when his deal expires this summer.

Indeed, the race for his signature is starting to heat up, according to a report from Sports Boom, which credits both Newcastle and Liverpool with an interest.

Eddie Howe is keen on greater strength in depth at the back, with PIF determined to win the race and now ready to make their move.

But St. James' Park could be a tough sell to one of the most in-demand free agents of the summer, with the Magpies falling way short of expectations this season, currently occupying 13th place, after taking just 46 points from 36 matches.

Newcastle are nine points adrift of Bournemouth, and Senesi, who has been lauded as "sublime" by one journalist, has played a key role in their success, making 35 Premier League appearances and recording five assists, which would rank him joint-first in Howe's squad.

Anthony Gordon has struggled to create chances this season, despite recording 21 assists across the previous two campaigns, and the former Everton man has been left on the bench for the last two Premier League matches.

Anthony Gordon future update

Newcastle targeting Senesi comes after Howe admitted he has been frustrated by his side's defending in 2026, which is the reason Gordon wasn't called upon during the 1-1 draw against Nottingham Forest.

The manager said: "It was tactical. The team has performed well in Anthony's absence. Obviously, we have gone with a bit more solidity with Joelinton playing wide and one winger the other side just to try and strengthen us defensively, because we weren't happy with how we were defending.

"Since January, really, we have been disappointed - so a change of structure really. Ant has come back to fitness. He's training well but, also, I'm looking at the future as well."

The 25-year-old could be set to move on this summer, having agreed personal terms with Bayern Munich, but another option may be on the table too, as Paris Saint-Germain have now entered the race.
