Newcastle United are now leading the race for long-term target Giorgio Scalvini, with Atalanta prepared to sanction a sale for €45m (£38m).
The Magpies have set out to improve their defence this summer, and they could revisit a move for Scalvini, who emerged as a target back in 2025, when it was revealed that Eddie Howe is personally a fan.
Since then, the 22-year-old has continued to receive regular game time for the Serie A side, making 30 appearances in all competitions last season, predominantly featuring as a centre-back.
However, Ben Mattinson also believes the Italian is capable of being deployed slightly forward, given his style of play, with the Como scout saying: "The thought of Scalvini as a DM actually reminds me of how Arne Slot uses Wieffer. They have a very similar style of ball winning, that front-footed aggressive style. They like to push up to win the ball."
The Italian's ball-winning proficiency is underlined by the fact he averaged 2.1 interceptions per 90 in the Serie A last season, which was 0.6 more than any other member of the Atalanta squad.
Considering Howe has already lost Sandro Tonali this summer, he could do with signing a player capable of slotting into defensive midfield, while a long-term replacement may also be needed for Fabian Schar, who is now 34-years-old.
Newcastle in pole position to sign Giorgio Scalvini
According to a report from Tutto Atalanta (via Sport Witness), Newcastle are now out in front in the race for Scalvini, and Atalanta are prepared to cash-in for around €45m (£38m).
Although Dan Burn starred for England at the World Cup, the centre-back could now be approaching the latter stages of his career at 34-years-old, much like Schar, which means Howe may need to sign a younger defender this summer.
There has been 'constant' interest from the Premier League, but the Magpies are now well-placed to secure the Atalanta star's signature, and he could be a solid signing.

Schar and Burn have just one year remaining on their contracts at St. James' Park. As such, it is about time Newcastle brought in a new centre-back, and Scalvini could be a long-term addition to Howe's squad at just 22-years-old. |
Nick Pope and Aaron Ramsdale have to share some of the blame for Newcastle's disappointing defensive record, and Newcastle have also set out to sign a new goalkeeper this summer.
However, they have now pulled out of the race for James Trafford, which means a move for Parma star Zion Suzuki could be more likely, and the Japanese shot-stopper's agent has informed the Magpies a deal could be possible.
