Newcastle United have already commenced plans to reinforce their side in the summer transfer window, starting with in-demand Gremio defender Viery.
Newcastle launch scouting mission to sign defender
After such a tough season, it's likely to be a long old summer for Newcastle. They're facing the risk of losing their best stars yet again, just 12 months after Alexander Isak's record move to Liverpool. This time, it's Anthony Gordon who's threatening to steal the headlines amid interest from Bayern Munich.
It will leave the Magpies with a decision to make, but a decision which could at least welcome some hefty funds to spend big themselves this summer.
They'll have to spend that money a lot wiser than last time out, of course, and the arrival of a promising defender could be the perfect start. According to Sports Boom, Newcastle are now the frontrunners to sign Viery from Gremio this summer, having launched an in-person scouting mission on the defender.
He won't come cheap, though. Reports are indicating that the South American has a release clause worth as much as €50m (£43m) for clubs overseas - giving Newcastle plenty to think about.
Newcastle fans, should PIF spend as much as £43m on a player of Viery's talent this summer?
At just 21 years old, Viery may not be the finished product, but he is one with plenty of potential. Described as "dominant" by U23 scout Antonio Mango, the young defender fits the mould of a modern defender and could become the long-term partner for Malick Thiaw that Newcastle have been searching for.
Given that Fabian Schar is not getting any younger at 34 years old, either, Newcastle could certainly do with an injection of youth in their backline.
Howe confident of now Isak repeat this summer
With the season coming to an end this Sunday, the focus of Eddie Howe's press conference was centred around the transfer window. And, just like last year, the Newcastle boss was forced to answer questions about the potential of major departures, reiterating that things will be different this time around.
"I don’t think you can ever look at one moment or look for excuses or look to blame anything or anyone, it’s just the situation that it was and we had to try to make the best of that moment.
"But I think the summer as a whole was very, very difficult for us. Of course, we had no sporting director, no chief executive – that left a big hole for us – and looking back, I think we’re in a lot better position now to hopefully execute what we need to do."
What that means for the likes of Gordon remains to be seen, but it sounds as though Newcastle are keen to get any of their business done early this summer.
