Trent Alexander-Arnold is getting his England chance under Thomas Tuchel – who isn’t sugar coating any of the realities about that.

Thomas Tuchel is honest – sometimes shockingly honest. It doesn’t always work in his favour, but as a fan it’s great to have a manager who is so candid rather than hiding everything behind weasel words.

We saw it with his comments earlier in this international break about Cole Palmer. Now he’s been disarmingly honest about Trent Alexander Arnold.

The Real Madrid right back was left out of the World Cup squad, but is now getting his chance. Asked if this was a “now or never” moment for the 27 year old, Tuchel basically said it was.

How Trent can make himself essential for England

“Good question. Maybe, maybe a little bit. You always have the chance, I would say,” Tuchel said in quotes picked up by the Daily Telegraph.

“Once you are in camp it’s a big opportunity if other players are not here. You can impress and mark your territory and show his true capacity that no one’s doubting.”

Tuchel also touched on what Alexander-Arnold can work on – the partnership with Bukayo Saka on the right wing:

“Bukayo is normally used to a lot of movements around him. That brings normally the best out of Bukayo. They need also to find a way to not be too static, to not be too ball-position focused, that we have on the right side movement through the last line and that we play with dynamic movement.

“That’s maybe the challenge for Trent, to buy a little bit into a new idea and a bit out of his comfort zone. But he’s trying and it’s never too late to prove a point.”
