After being released by the Philadelphia 76ers last week, Ricky Council IV has quickly found a new home within the Atlantic Division.

According to Shams Charania of ESPN, the 6’6″ swingman has agreed to a one-year deal with the Brooklyn Nets, per information shared by his agent, Adie von Gontard.

Council entered the NBA undrafted out of Arkansas in 2023 but managed to secure a spot with the Sixers, where he spent the first two years of his professional career.

He saw action in 105 games during that span, including a team-leading 73 appearances during the 2024–25 season.

Despite showing flashes of potential in his rookie campaign, Council struggled to maintain that level of performance in his second year as his responsibilities grew.

Last season, he averaged 7.3 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game across 17.1 minutes, but his efficiency dipped. He shot just 38.2% from the field, 25.8% from three-point range, and 80.4% from the free throw line.

With the Nets entering a rebuilding phase, they’re in a position to take a flyer on a young player like Council, who turns 24 this Sunday.

His increased playing time in Philadelphia last season was largely the result of injuries to key rotation players rather than a reflection of long-term confidence in his role.

While specific terms of the agreement have not yet been disclosed, the contract is expected to be for the league minimum and likely non-guaranteed.

This would allow Brooklyn to finalize the signing without impacting their salary cap flexibility later in the offseason.
