The NBA and FIBA said Thursday they will move forward with NBA Europe after EuroLeague owners rejected a merger offer earlier this week. The two organizations issued a joint statement making clear their plans remain on track.

"A partnership between the EuroLeague, FIBA and the NBA to unify the European basketball ecosystem would unlock the game's enormous potential across Europe for the benefit of clubs, players and, most importantly, fans," said the NBA and FIBA. "The NBA and FIBA remain committed to moving forward with a new professional men's league in Europe and helping build a stronger, more sustainable basketball ecosystem alongside partners who share our vision of growth, opportunity and the core principles of the European sports model."

The exchange reflects growing tension after months of talks between the sides. However, the door to further negotiations remains open, sources told ESPN.

The NBA presented a formal merger proposal last month after nearly two years of development. EuroLeague leadership met this week at Lake Como in Italy and voted it down, believing it undervalued the league.

EuroLeague members also reportedly discussed expanding beyond the current 13 license holders. That move could block the NBA from certain cities and partners.

Several EuroLeague clubs have held extensive talks with the NBA and are believed to be seriously interested in joining. Barcelona said this week it and the league would consider an amended offer from the NBA and FIBA.

The NBA has gathered expansion bids for new franchises across Western Europe. It plans a 16-team league that could launch as early as 2027.

Commissioner Adam Silver and deputy commissioner Mark Tatum, who leads the European project, are in Macao this week for the NBA China Games between the Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks.

The EuroLeague formed in 2001 after a season-long split between two rival leagues, one operated by FIBA. It expanded to 20 teams in 2025-26.
