Washington Nationals infielder Luis Garcia Jr., who is not normally known for his power, has already reached a career high in home runs (20) as the halfway mark of the season approaches.

Prior to this season, the most home runs he hit was 18 in 2024. He's having a career season and has been a dominant 1-2 offensive punch with James Wood. On the season, Garcia has logged an impressive .291 batting average with 68 RBI, an .894 OPS and a .322 OBP. His 47.8% hard hit rate sits in the 83rd percentile and his xSLG of .520 ranks in the 92nd percentile. 

His transition from second to first base this season has been a significant factor that's enhanced his home-run power. Following struggles at second base last season, he recorded a -7 Outs Above Average (OAA), so the transition to first has helped take away the mental defensive stress he was experiencing. 

Second base is a position that requires significant lateral movement, so Garcia has been able to conserve his leg strength, which has contributed to his strong hard-hit rate. 

Other factors contributing to Luis Garcia Jr.'s power surge

Making an adjustment with his positioning by moving closer to the plate has allowed him to tackle pitches up and inside the zone. His compact swing has also provided him with more pull-side power, which has allowed him to elevate the ball and produce elite exit velocities (92.2 mph average exit velocity). 

Last season, he only held an average exit velocity of 90.2 mph that sat in the 55th percentile, so his enhanced average exit velocity this season has provided a surge in his home-run power.

Across the last month, Garcia has been on an offensive hot streak, batting .360 with 13 home runs, 30 RBI and two stolen bases. In the Nationals' 8-2 victory over the Houston Astros on July 8, he carried huge momentum, going 3-for-4 with two runs, one home run, 3 RBI, a stolen base and two batted balls over 100 mph. 

Analyst Mark DeRosa commented on his offensive dominance, stating, “He’s had a career year before we’ve gotten to the [All-Star] break. … He’s been a top-five hitter across the board.”
