In the past, the one place that Cole Thompson loved to be was in his comfort zone. However, that all changed a year ago when Cole decided to take a chance as a privateer and head to the USA to race the 250SX West class in the Monster Energy Supercross Series. Since then Cole has been finding success on the track as well as off of the track with his Tommy’s World segment on the Inside X show on RydeTV. Now, after taking wins at the opening two Triple Crown Series SXTour events Cole announced over the weekend that he’s leaving Canada to compete in the Australian SX Series for the Serco Yamaha Team. This commitment will see Cole remain in Australia until early December and will also see him lining up at the final round of the FIM World SX Championships in Melbourne in a few weeks. We caught up with CT16 via FaceTime as he’s already down under preparing with his new team.

MXP: Hey Cole, I saw the PR over the weekend but I didn’t realize that you were already in Australia. When did you fly down there?

CT: I arrived Friday morning in Australia and since then I’ve just been trying to feel comfortable with the massive time change.

It’s a big travel day for sure but I’m sure you’re getting some good Aussie food in you and you’re be feeling normal soon enough. You said you arrived on Friday morning there, what has your new team had you doing since then?

It was cool because they had me doing some training right away. Not a lot of stuff but one day we went riding just so I could try out the bike and see what changes if any, we needed to do. I actually felt great on the bike and not too bad with the jetlag. We don’t have a lot of time before the series begins down here so we have to hit the ground running.

We know you didn’t have a lot done to your bikes in Canada but overall what are your first impressions of the Serco Yamaha?

The bike is really good and since I’ve been riding Yamaha’s at home for the past year it didn’t take me long to adapt to this new bike. The power is good, and the suspension feels comfortable, I’m really looking forward to doing some testing here in the next week. As I said, Melbourne is coming up soon and it’s going to be great to jump right into that series and race with the top riders.

2022 FOX Australian Supercross Championship Calendar:

·       Round 1: Marvel Stadium, Melbourne, Victoria – October 21

·       Round 2: Adelaide Showground, South Australia – October 29

·       Round 3: McDonald Jones Stadium, Newcastle, NSW – November 26

·       Round 4: Wagga International Stadium, Wagga Wagga, NSW – December 3″

Were you able to watch any of the racing from Cardiff to see who you will be racing against in Melbourne?

I only saw the highlights of it but from what I saw the racing was good. The track looked really slippery and not as technical as I would’ve thought. The people I’ve spoken to here in Australia say that the Melbourne round is going to be a lot better as they’ve had races there before. Apparently, the dirt is better and the layout will be a little different. I’m excited to get racing down here as it’s always been a dream of mine to come to Australia.

Like a lot of people, I was surprised when I saw your Social Media post announcing that you were headed to Australia. Was this a last-minute deal or was it brewing for some time?

The deal came together a few weeks after the Gopher Dunes SX so I knew during the Sarnia round that I would be coming here. I was really nervous in Sarnia because I didn’t want to crash or get involved in some overly aggressive racing. We were going to announce it sooner but we wanted to be fair to Parts Canada as down here I’ll be wearing Seven gear. So we waited until this weekend when I was with my new team to make the official announcement.

Well, this is really exciting as any time you get to take your craft across the globe you have to really cherish the moment. Where is the Serco Yamaha Team based and where will you be living?

Right now I’m just in a condo on the Gold Coast but this week we’re driving up to the Sunshine Coast as that is where the tracks are and where I’ll be living for the rest of the time here.

As it gets colder here in Canada just hearing names like the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast makes me want to get a plane and head to Australia. You mentioned that currently, it’s just you in Australia. Will your better half Chloe be joining you there? I would assume that she’s going to love Australia!

Yes, she’s coming down soon. Her sister is having a baby, so she remained back home to be there for that. But yes, she’s excited to see Australia for sure. It’s going to be quite an adventure for the two of us.

Looks like it will be another fun adventure for the Thompson’s.

We are most certainly excited for you and your new Serco Yamaha Team. Good luck and we’ll check in again soon.

For sure Palms, thank you for reaching out. I saw that you rode the new 2023 YZ450F last week, how was it?

I can’t say too much until after October 23rd but I will say that there are a lot of changes to the new model and I think it’s going to suit your riding style. We’ll talk more after the 23rd (laughs).

Sounds good! I cannot wait to ride it.
