Major League Baseball announced that Seattle Mariners left-hander Gabe Speier has been issued a three-game suspension and an undisclosed fine for intentionally throwing at Tigers second baseman Gleyber Torres Wednesday night. 

Seattle manager Dan Wilson received a one-game suspension. Speier is appealing, so the suspension is held in abeyance until that process plays out. Managers don’t have appellate rights, so Wilson will serve his suspension today.

The Speier/Torres incident was the culmination of bubbling tensions earlier in the game, as laid out by Jason Beck of MLB.com. Bryan Woo started for the Mariners and hit three batters during his time on the mound. 

In the bottom of the seventh, Seattle Cal Raleigh was hit by a pitch from Tigers left-hander Enmanuel De Jesus. In the top of the eighth, Speier hit Torres. The benches and bullpen cleared, although nothing especially noteworthy came of that. The umpires ejected Speier and Wilson.
