Michael Porter Jr. entered Brooklyn as a proven champion, but with a very different responsibility than the one he held in Denver. After becoming the veteran leader on the NBA’s youngest roster, Porter believes the Nets are developing something meaningful.

“Being in Denver, being one of the younger guys, a part of established culture and everything, and then winning a championship, to come to Brooklyn and be the leader on the team, one of the oldest guys on the team,” Porter said, via Nets Wire. “We had five rookies, the youngest team in the NBA. It was a completely different role that I had, but it was something that I cherished. I think that we’re building something special over there.”

Porter arrived in Brooklyn ahead of the 2025-26 season and immediately became the centerpiece of the Nets’ offense. In 52 games, he averaged 24.2 points, 7.1 rebounds and 3.0 assists while shooting 46.3% from the field, 36.3% from three-point range and 85.9% from the free-throw line.

The forward ranked as one of the league’s highest-volume perimeter scorers, attempting 9.3 three-pointers per game and making 3.4. His 3.0 assists per game also represented a career-high mark as he took on a larger playmaking role in Brooklyn.

Despite Porter’s production, the Nets struggled during a rebuilding season, finishing 20-62 and 13th in the Eastern Conference. Brooklyn’s roster featured several young players along with rookies and developing prospects such as Noah Clowney, Egor Demin and Drake Powell.

The Nets’ rebuilding direction has created uncertainty around Porter’s future. Chris Haynes reported that Porter could eventually seek a departure if Brooklyn does not explore a contract extension, while general manager Sean Marks acknowledged that the organization values the forward.

“We’ll have those discussions. We’ve got time. There’s no immediate hurry right now. We value him a lot. He had a terrific year,” Marks said. “I love Mike, the guy, the person, the player, and I hope he is part of this team.”

Porter is entering the final season of his contract and is scheduled to earn $40.8 million in 2026-27. Brooklyn has reportedly explored trade possibilities involving him, but his role as a veteran leader could be important for a young roster still searching for long-term stability.
