The New York Mets sent a top-100 prospect, utility man Jett Williams, along with pitcher Brandon Sproat, to acquire pitcher Freddy Peralta. The Mets are reportedly attempting to recoup those losses.

Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic reported that the Mets are asking for a top-100 prospect as part of a package for Peralta. Rosenthal and Sammon noted that pitchers Dustin May and Merrill Kelly, two impending free agents who were traded at the 2025 deadline, were able to fetch that type of return.

The trade for May, in particular, could give the Mets hope. He struggled in his first year back following Tommy John surgery and a procedure to repair a torn esophagus. He posted a 4.85 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP over his 104 innings for the Dodgers, striking out 97 batters with 43 walks.

Health, track record could help Mets get desired return for Freddy Peralta

Peralta has struggled in his first season in New York, posting a 4.99 ERA and a 1.478 WHIP over his 113.2 innings entering Friday, striking out 113 batters with 48 walks. However, Peralta had performed at a top-of-the-rotation level between 2021 and 2025, posting a 3.30 ERA and a 1.093 WHIP over his 738.1 innings, striking out 895 batters with 271 walks.

Peralta has also been remarkably durable, making at least 30 starts and throwing over 165 innings in every season since 2022. His track record of taking the ball every fifth day and excellent performance may be enough to convince an interested team to part with a highly regarded prospect.
