The Mets announced that director of hitting Jeff Albert and quality assurance coach Danny Barnes will not be on the 2027 coaching staff. Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, who first reported the news, suggests it’s possible they’ll find different roles in the organization but are free to pursue other opportunities. DiComo adds that the rest of the staff, aside from batting practice pitcher Kevin Mahoney, is expected to return in Andy Green’s first full season in the manager’s office.

Albert has been in the New York organization since 2022. He spent fours years as their director of hitting, overseeing the team’s offensive program. Albert joined the uniformed coaching staff last offseason with the same title. Troy Snitker was hired as the team’s hitting coach last year, while assistant hitting coach Rafael Fernandez has been in the organization for a couple decades.

The Mets underperformed in most aspects in 2026. That extended to the offense, as they tied for 20th in scoring and were in the bottom third of MLB in all three slash stats. They did pick things up later in the season, but the overall results were a disappointment for a lineup with as much talent as they had.

DiComo writes that the Mets haven’t determined whether they’ll hire a direct replacement in what had been Albert’s role. It’s possible they instead bring on another assistant who’d work underneath Snitker as the lead hitting voice. In either case, they’re opting mostly for continuity on the staff despite the managerial change. Green took over Carlos Mendoza’s staff when the latter was fired in late June. Although he was initially expected to move back to the front office at season’s end, Green accepted the full-time position and signed a three-year extension in September.
