While speaking with reporters after dropping both games of a doubleheader versus the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday, multiple individuals associated with the New York Mets seemed to see the writing on the wall regarding what appears to be a lost season for the organization. 

The Mets then fell to 34-47 on the season via a 4-3 extra-innings loss to the Cubs on Thursday night. Following that defeat, multiple Mets players spoke honestly about the psyche of the team's clubhouse in the early days of summer. 

Freddy Peralta: "Losing is no fun"

"I cannot speak for everybody, but what I can say and what I feel is just, losing is no fun," Mets starting pitcher Freddy Peralta admitted, per Robert Sanchez of SNY. "And at the end of the day, I know we need to win and that we have a team that is supposed to win. What I can say is we’ve been trying, and we’ve been working really hard to get through this and trying to make adjustments." 

Such "adjustments" have meant nothing as it pertains to the Mets possibly turning things around. New York has now lost six straight games, and the Mets traded struggling left-handed starting pitcher David Peterson to the Cubs for infield prospect Cole Mathis late Wednesday night. 

Multiple Mets reporters insisted that transaction "should not be read as a sign of surrender, nor an indication that the Mets are now in full sell-off mode." However, MLB insider Jeff Passan of ESPN said that "rival executives expect plenty more" fire-sale moves from the Mets before the Aug. 3 trade deadline arrives. 

It seems to be a lock that Peralta is among the Mets players available to advertised contenders ahead of July. 

"Right now we just need to keep trying and play better, myself too," Peralta continued. "We all need to play better and just try to come back and remind ourselves that we are big leaguers and we are great at this game. We just need to put everything together and try to put up a W every day."

Everybody with the Mets "is frustrated"

On Friday night, the Mets will begin a three-game home series versus the rival Philadelphia Phillies (45-36). Following Thursday's defeat, Mets utility player Eric Wagaman challenged his teammates to embrace a one-game-at-a-time mentality. 

"Everybody in here is frustrated," Wagaman said, per Brian Heyman of Newsday. "We know what our record is. We can’t get all those wins back in one day. We just have to start stacking them and take it day by day."

One wonders whether or not manager Carlos Mendoza will be shown the door before or during the All-Star break if the Mets don't start stacking wins at some point over the next couple of weeks.
