Barring what would be a shocking development, a New York Mets team that began Tuesday holding a record of 38-53 will sell multiple contributors not locked down via multiyear contracts before the Aug. 3 MLB trade deadline arrives. 

The future of once-advertised ace Freddy Peralta continues to spark numerous conversations, both because he is set to reach free agency this coming fall and because he has largely failed to impress since Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns acquired the right-hander from the Milwaukee Brewers this past offseason. 

For a piece published on Tuesday, Will Sammon of The Athletic shared an update regarding what the Mets may be able to get for Peralta this summer. 

Mets will do "fine" in an expected Freddy Peralta trade

"Multiple scouts and executives who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to speak freely on the topic said the Mets should end up doing fine on a return for Peralta," Sammon wrote. "It’s unlikely they’ll score the equivalent of what they shipped to the Milwaukee Brewers over the winter for Peralta: pitcher Brandon Sproat and infielder Jett Williams, two top-100 prospects. But they should do OK."

At this point, frustrated Mets fans would probably happily accept the team getting anything of note for Peralta later in July. Over the first 19 starts of his Mets tenure, Peralta went 5-7 with a 4.68 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP over just 100 innings of work. Most recently, he allowed three runs (one earned) across 4.2 innings in New York's 7-6 extra-innings win over the rival Atlanta Braves on Monday. 

Which teams could be interested in Freddy Peralta?

As far back as May, the Chicago Cubs have routinely been listed among potential landing spots for Peralta. Sammon mentioned that the Cubs, the San Diego Padres, the Toronto Blue Jays and the Tampa Bay Rays are all "worth monitoring" as it pertains to a possible Peralta trade. Of course, Peralta producing at least a couple of solid starts over the next several weeks could result in more than a few contenders making serious calls to the Mets about the 30-year-old who seemingly needs a change of scenery.
