New York Mets starting pitcher Freddy Peralta is reportedly seeking a massive long-term contract in free agency.

The contract is reportedly comparable to the 8-year $218 million deal that Max Fried signed, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

The 30-year-old Peralta owns a 4-4 record, with a 3.63 ERA, a 1.32 WHIP and 74 strikeouts across 72 innings pitched this season.

While Peralta possesses durability, with over 165 innings pitched in each of the last three seasons, committing to the contract he is asking for could hold considerable financial risk.

Freddy Peralta will be seeking a contract in free agency similar to the 8-year, $218 million deal that Max Fried signed, per @BNightengale

The argument for and against Freddy Peralta's targeted free agency asking price

Aside from his durability, he has showcased how he's a reliable ace with dominant swing-and-miss stuff (three straight seasons with 200+ strikeouts entering 2026). He holds a high ceiling making him worthy of a long-term hefty contract.

Since he stands as one of the top starting pitchers on the free agent market who isn't Tarik Skubal, a team in urgent need of pitcher to stabilize their rotation may be willing to meet the demands he is requesting.

But considering the asking price, teams should also be cautious. If a team were to sign Peralta to a lengthy deal, it would assume the risk of a decline in his performance as he ages near the end of the deal.

When exploring aspects of his game such as his strikeout rate and FIP, his numbers have indicated a slight regression from his usual standard. For example, his strikeout rate has dropped from 23.9% this season from 28.2% last season while his FIP sits at 4.01 this season compared to 3.64 in 2025.

It remains to be seen if Peralta will be dealt at the deadline with the Mets in the midst of a disappointing season or if he will remain in Queens through the end of the season. Regardless of where he's pitching, his performance over the rest of 2026 will likely have a significant impact on whether he can find a deal anywhere close to the one he's reportedly seeking.
