It is no secret that the New York Mets are in the middle of a disaster season. Entering Friday, New York sat in last place in the NL East with a 41-57 record, the fourth worst in all of baseball.

Because of that, nearly everyone on the roster has been made available ahead of the trade deadline. One of those players available includes right-hander Clay Holmes, but the latest reports may indicate that Holmes is safe.

Mets, Clay Holmes working toward an extension

According to MLB insider Chelsea Janes, the Mets and Holmes are expected to begin potential extension talks in the coming days. Holmes is currently in the second season of a three-year, $38 million contract he signed before the 2025 season.

The contract includes an opt-out after the 2026 season, something that could be a major reason for New York hoping to begin extension talks sooner rather than later.

Clay Holmes has been very good in his transition to the starting rotation

Before the 2025 season, Holmes had started just four games in his career, all of which came during his rookie season in 2018.

It was known that the Mets would be transitioning him to a starter, a move that has worked out extremely well. Holmes has made 40 starts for the Mets across the past two seasons, pitching to a 3.26 ERA with 174 strikeouts across 218 1/3 innings pitched.

All extension talks could be quick to change if New York decides to move Holmes prior to the trade deadline, but if not, an extension between the two sides seems to be the most likely outcome.
