Marjorie Lajoie and Jean-Luc Baker have formed a new ice dance partnership and will represent Canada in international competition.

Previously, Lajoie competed with Zachary Lagha. The pair won the 2019 World Junior title, captured seven Grand Prix medals, and represented Canada at two Olympic Winter Games before concluding their 15-year partnership following a tenth-place finish at the 2026 Olympics.

Meanwhile, Baker arrives with an impressive international résumé of his own. Best known for his long-standing partnership with Kaitlin Hawayek, Baker represented the United States for many years, capturing the 2018 Four Continents title, winning five Grand Prix medals, and competing at the highest levels of the sport. Hawayek and Baker also represented Team USA at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games.

Baker’s outgoing humor contrasts with Lajoie’s confident, businesslike approach. That contrast could become one of the partnership’s biggest strengths, both on and off the ice. Despite their different personalities, both have built successful international careers and earned a reputation for professionalism.

On the ice, the partnership brings together two accomplished ice dancers known for their skating skills, performance quality, and competitive experience. However, the biggest question is how quickly they can develop as a team. Even so, the pairing immediately becomes one of the most fascinating stories in Canadian ice dance.

The announcement comes at a pivotal time for Canadian ice dance. As the discipline enters a new phase following the 2026 Olympic season, Lajoie and Baker have an opportunity to make an immediate impact.

Ultimately, the new team gives both ice dancers a chance to write the next chapter of their careers. Fans will be watching closely to see what identity they forge together and how their strengths translate into competition.

What are your first impressions of this new team? How do you think they fit into Canada’s current ice dance hierarchy? What style of programs would you like to see them skate in their debut season? Share your thoughts here!
