“I think Wardley is determined to get the title back, so he’s hungry. I think a fighter always wants that immediate get back. It’s up to the management to decide if it’s in his best interest or not,” Malignaggi told talkSPORT Boxing.

“From the outside looking in, I’m not sure. Maybe with Wardley, you might want to take one tune-up fight first before you get back into the rematch. But, you know, they’re going right back into it. Maybe Wardley wants it badly, and he’s going to get it.”

A tune-up would have allowed Wardley to work on the changes he needs against live opposition before testing them against Dubois.

Wardley found Dubois with some hard right hands in May, but those moments were not enough to overcome Dubois’ greater variety. Malignaggi believes Wardley needs too many changes to depend on a few small corrections in the rematch.

“Unless Wardley catches Dubois, it is very difficult for me to be able to think that he’s able to make those kinds of adjustments,” said Malignaggi. “There’s just too many adjustments Wardley has to make, and I’m not sure he’s going to be able to make them in such a short amount of time.”

Malignaggi believes Wardley needs to become less predictable and do a better job of setting traps rather than waiting for an opening.

“He’s got to be a little bit more open-minded as far as setting different traps. He wasn’t setting many traps the first time around, yet he still caught Dubois.”

Wardley’s power gives him a chance to reverse the result, but that does not solve the larger tactical issue. He needs to fight differently against Dubois, and he will have to find out during the rematch if those changes actually work. A tune-up would have given Wardley the opportunity to test them before returning to the opponent who stopped him.
