MILWAUKEE — The chances of Luis Gil getting back to the big leagues to impact the Yankees in the short term were already fairly slim.

Now they are zero, at least for the next six weeks or so.

Gil landed on the injured list at Triple-A on Friday with right shoulder inflammation and will be shut down from throwing for at least three weeks, manager Aaron Boone said.

The time spent not throwing for pitchers is typically equal to the time it takes to build back up, meaning it could be at least six weeks until Gil returns to game action.

The former American League Rookie of the Year was optioned back to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on April 26 after making four starts and posting a 6.05 ERA.

But Boone indicated that this shoulder issue did not have a hand in Gil’s poor results.

“No, I think it’s new,” Boone said before the Yankees opened a series against the Brewers at American Family Field.

Gil, who missed the first four months of last season after straining his lat in spring training, did not pitch in another game at Triple-A after being optioned there nearly two weeks ago.

Boone said Gil was examined by team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad and went through a battery of tests before this diagnosis.

The Yankees had replaced Gil in the big league rotation with top prospect Elmer Rodríguez, who was sent back to Triple-A earlier this week with Carlos Rodón set to come off the IL for his season debut on Sunday.

Gerrit Cole is also expected back, perhaps by the end of May, making Gil’s potential path back to the big leagues even cloudier — and that was before he got hurt.
