Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayLeBron James is weighing his future with the Los Angeles Lakers this offseason, and people familiar with his thinking say the organization's approach in demonstrating genuine interest will carry as much weight as the contract figure itself. How the Lakers frame any offer, not just the dollar amount, could determine whether James returns for another season.
"The Lakers can't just offer James a number. They have to offer a why behind that number," an agent with prior clients on L.A.'s roster told ESPN. "Their plan for any discount would have to be coherent."
The stakes of that dynamic are sharpened by what sources describe as a pattern of perceived slights. One source close to James told ESPN the organization tried to "push him out the door" following the trade for Luka Doncic. James left Crypto.com Arena after at least one game this season without changing clothes, still simmering over what he viewed as the franchise repeatedly taking him for granted.
The Lakers' internal salary discussions have added another layer of tension. During games this season, team officials ran an informal exercise in which an observer was asked to watch James play and assign a market value to that anonymous player, setting aside his name and legacy entirely. The full midlevel exception sits at $14.1 million, but figures of $20 million, $25 million and $30 million were also floated.
For James, as one of the best players in NBA history continuing to play at an All-Star level being evaluated as a nameless 6-foot-9 skills player could reasonably be read as a dismissal of everything he has meant to the franchise.
Yet those close to him say the door remains open.
"I think it's up to the Lakers," a source who attended Game 4 against Oklahoma City told ESPN. "He loves it in L.A."
James echoed that tone directly. When asked after the Thunder series whether any friction remained between the two sides, he was brief and direct.
"There's no static from me," James told ESPN.
