LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers have reportedly opened negotiations on a new contract, with both sides showing interest in continuing their long-running partnership ahead of free agency.

Speaking on ESPN Los Angeles, Brian Windhorst said discussions are already taking place and expressed confidence that an agreement will ultimately be reached before free agency begins.

“I believe there have been negotiations back and forth between LeBron and the Lakers,” Windhorst said. “There’s two weeks left between now and the start of free agency. They have two weeks to work something out. And I believe they will work something out.”

Windhorst added that he expects James to remain in Los Angeles on a deal that balances a strong salary with roster-building flexibility for the franchise.

“I believe LeBron will come back to the Lakers and they will have a deal that represents an equitable salary that will allow for a significant payout that gives the Lakers flexibility to add to the team.”

James joined the Lakers in 2018 and helped lead the franchise to the 2020 NBA championship.
