Katie Taylor brings the curtain down on one of the most significant careers in boxing history tonight when she faces France’s unbeaten contender Flora Pili at Croke Park in Dublin.

The 40-year-old has long spoken about her desire to fight at the iconic home of Irish sport, and more than 80,000 fans are expected to be in attendance as she makes the final walk of her professional career. Taylor has admitted that it was ‘Croke Park or nothing’ after completing her trilogy with Amanda Serrano last year.

There is still plenty at stake beyond the emotion of the occasion. The hometown hero defends her WBO, WBA and IBF super-lightweight titles, while the vacant WBC belt is also on the line, meaning victory would see her become undisputed champion for a third time.

Pili arrives with a perfect 12-0 record and represents the final challenge of Taylor’s career. The former European champion has never operated on a stage remotely like this. Taylor has made clear that she did not want an easy farewell and specifically asked for a fight carrying genuine risk, but enters the ring a monumental favourite.

The event and moment outweighed the main event action significantly. Taylor built up a steady lead with her front foot pressure and speed, with Pili making it a little interesting from the seventh onwards. Taylor went out swinging in the tenth and final round. She retires as the most influential female fighter in history and perhaps Ireland’s greatest athlete. Her mark will be felt on the sport for years to come.
