Manchester United have been hit by a major academy headache after JJ Gabriel asked to leave the club and began trying to secure his release from Old Trafford.

The request has caught United's hierarchy very much by surprise.

Club figures are said to be unsure what has caused the sudden change, particularly after spending months creating a clear route towards senior football for one of their brightest prospects.

Its timing has only added to the shock, as Gabriel had been in line to join Michael Carrick’s first-team squad for Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup tie against Brighton at Old Trafford.

At just 15, an appearance would have made him the youngest senior player in United history. Instead, his involvement is now uncertain while the club attempt to repair the situation.

Gabriel has been at United since the age of 11 and his rise through the academy has gathered serious pace.

He's regularly operated above his age group, trained with the senior side and announced himself in Europe with a hat-trick against Sabah on his UEFA Youth League debut.

He also became the youngest winner of United’s Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award last season. and it was yet another sign of the huge belief surrounding a forward who has previously attracted attention from Barcelona and Man City.

Sir Alex Ferguson and former head coach Ruben Amorim were reportedly among the senior figures to have spoken with Gabriel about his future and the pathway available at Old Trafford.

His age makes this very different from a normal transfer, as Gabriel cannot sign professional terms until he turns 17, while he becomes eligible for a scholarship when he turns 16 next month.

United believe his existing registration remains binding, meaning a move into free agency won't be automatic.

talkSPORT's Ben Jacobs has now revealed that the teenager is pushing for a quick departure and appears to have already identified a potential destination in the Premier League.

“JJ Gabriel has asked to leave Manchester United and is trying to enter into free agency, as called by Matt Law," Jacobs wrote on X.

“Manchester United are unclear what has prompted the request.

“The plan, prior to it, had been to include him in the first-team squad tomorrow for the EFL tie with Brighton. Manchester United feel the situation is rectifiable, but talkSPORT understands the player is pushing to leave as soon as possible.

“Although nothing is formally lined up, it’s understood JJ Gabriel has another Premier League club in mind.”

That final detail will be a concern at Old Trafford.

Losing an elite prospect would hurt, but watching him continue his development with a domestic rival would make the setback considerably harder to take.

Jacobs didn't identify the club Gabriel is considering and stressed that no deal is currently waiting for him, although two unnamed Prem sides are believed to be keen, and it has been reported that Chelsea are among his admirers.

United’s immediate priority will be to discover the reason behind the request and reopen a conversation with Gabriel and his representatives.

The club still believe the disagreement can be solved, but the player’s desire to leave quickly suggests there is significant work to do.

A Brighton debut was meant to provide the latest glimpse of Gabriel’s future in red. It may now become the opportunity that shows just how much United stand to lose.
