CHICAGO – A day later, Jazz Chisholm Jr. still seems to have avoided anything serious, though he was out of the lineup Friday afternoon after exiting Thursday’s game early with right hamstring cramps.

Aaron Boone said he viewed the Yankees second baseman as a “fully active player” against the Cubs at Wrigley Field, but just wanted to give him a little extra time to be safe, especially with a left-hander on the mound in Shota Imanaga.

“He is OK,” Boone said before the series opener. “I think just felt like wanting to be a little cautious dealing with it, but it does seem like it was just cramps. He gave me the thumbs up today. With a lefty going, the turnaround for a day game, I just didn’t want to risk anything. But I view him as a fully active player today.”

The plan was for Chisholm to go through his normal pregame routine and be ready to come off the bench if needed, as José Caballero started at second base in his place.

“[In] my mind, he’s good,” Boone said. “Trainers feel good about it.”

Chisholm first started experiencing the cramps in the bottom of the eighth inning Thursday against the White Sox, then pulled up early running to first base on a groundout in the ninth.

He was hobbling around and stretching out his right leg the rest of the game before being pinch run for by Caballero in the 11th after he was intentionally walked.

The Yankees already have Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger and Giancarlo Stanton on the injured list and cannot afford another key player joining them, even though Chisholm is in the midst of an inconsistent season.
