Jalen Duren is dissatisfied with the Detroit Pistons' initial restricted free agent offer and is preparing to explore sign-and-trade scenarios when permitted Tuesday, league sources told Sam Amick of The Athletic.

Duren, 22, is eligible for a five-year, $287.1 million maximum contract after earning All-NBA third team honors. Sources say the gap between the two sides is substantial enough that Duren is now considering ways to land elsewhere. A sign-and-trade is viewed as the preferred path over an offer sheet, which the Pistons could match.

Duren averaged 19.5 points on 65 percent shooting and 10 rebounds across 70 regular season games, finishing sixth leaguewide in Player Impact Estimate behind Nikola Jokic, Victor Wembanyama, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Luka Doncic and Kawhi Leonard. His production helped Detroit post a 60-22 record, the franchise's best since 2005-06.

But Duren's play dropped off dramatically in the playoffs. In 14 games against the Orlando Magic and Cleveland Cavaliers, Duren averaged just 10.2 points on 51.4 percent shooting and 8.5 rebounds before the Pistons were eliminated in the second round.

Duren is represented by Chafie Fields of The Team. Fields also represents fellow restricted free agent Tari Eason of the Houston Rockets.

With Duren potentially available via sign-and-trade, questions are mounting about whether Detroit would engage in those discussions alongside their pursuit of external upgrades. League sources say the Pistons had serious interest in Austin Reaves before he re-signed with the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday. They have also been connected to Jaylen Brown, Leonard and Tyler Herro.

Detroit also faces an extension decision on 23-year-old first-team All-Defense selection Ausar Thompson, whose deal could reach five years and $162 million.

"Obviously, JD and AT will be expensive," said Pistons president of basketball operations Trajan Langdon in May. "Once that happens, the optionality decreases. This isn't a one-year thing. We have to keep that in mind as well."

The Pistons traded center Isaiah Stewart to the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday for three second-round picks. Veteran forward Tobias Harris is an unrestricted free agent, while Duncan Robinson could be waived to generate cap flexibility, with only $2 million of his $15.9 million salary guaranteed.
