Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayThe IPL landscape witnessed a dramatic shake-up as Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Delhi Capitals (DC) completed one of the biggest trades in recent league history. Former LSG captain Rishabh Pant has officially returned to Delhi Capitals, the franchise where he spent nine memorable seasons before his move to Lucknow. In exchange, India’s premier wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav will now represent the Super Giants heading into the IPL 2027 season.
Pant joins Delhi on a revised contract worth ₹15 crore, significantly lower than the ₹27 crore deal that made headlines during the previous auction cycle. Kuldeep, meanwhile, moves to Lucknow at his existing salary of ₹13.5 crore. While the trade strengthens LSG’s bowling department and provides additional auction flexibility, it also creates a significant leadership vacuum following a disappointing 2026 campaign that saw the franchise finish at the bottom of the table.
With team director Tom Moody determined to oversee a fresh start, Lucknow must now identify a captain capable of guiding the team through its next chapter. Among the available options, some overseas stars stand out as leading contenders.
3 players who can lead LSG after Rishabh Pant’s exit
1) Mitchell Marsh

If recent performances are anything to go by, Mitchell Marsh appears to be the strongest candidate for the role. The Australian all-rounder was one of the few bright spots in an otherwise forgettable season for Lucknow, consistently delivering impactful performances with the bat.
Marsh scored 563 runs during the 2026 season at a blistering strike rate exceeding 163, underlining his value at the top of the order. Across his IPL career, he has accumulated more than 1,292 runs while also contributing over 37 wickets with the ball.
Beyond his on-field contributions, Marsh brings substantial leadership experience. As Australia’s T20I captain, he has built an impressive record and earned praise for his aggressive yet calculated decision-making. His long-standing association with LSG head coach Justin Langer and director Tom Moody could also prove crucial.
The shared cricketing philosophy among the trio may help establish a clear direction for the franchise. Given that Marsh is virtually guaranteed a place in the playing XI, appointing him captain could provide both stability and a strong cultural foundation for the rebuilding process.
2) Nicholas Pooran

Another serious contender is Nicholas Pooran, who already serves as Lucknow’s vice-captain and remains one of the franchise’s most important players. Retained for a massive ₹21 crore, Pooran is central to LSG’s plans moving forward. The West Indian batter has played over 70 IPL matches, scoring more than 1,700 runs at a strike rate above 155, making him one of the most destructive middle-order batters in the competition.
Perhaps his biggest advantage is familiarity. Pooran understands the dressing room environment, has worked closely with the management group, and enjoys the trust of teammates. His previous leadership roles with the West Indies and various franchise teams further strengthen his case.
While his batting numbers dipped slightly during the 2026 season, few doubt his ability to influence games single-handedly. For a franchise looking to maintain continuity amid significant changes, Pooran could represent the safest and most seamless captaincy choice.
3) Aiden Markram

The third option is Aiden Markram, a leader whose credentials speak for themselves. Widely respected for his calm temperament and tactical awareness, the South African has established himself as one of the most successful captains in franchise cricket.
Markram’s leadership journey includes guiding Sunrisers Eastern Cape to multiple SA20 titles and leading South Africa to a historic appearance in a T20 World Cup final. His reputation as a thoughtful strategist has only grown over the past few years.
Importantly, Markram is already a trusted figure within the broader Super Giants ecosystem, having captained affiliated teams in global leagues. That familiarity could make his transition into the LSG leadership role relatively smooth.
As Lucknow prepare for a new era following Pant’s departure, the franchise faces a crucial decision. Whether they opt for Marsh’s aggression, Pooran’s continuity, or Markram’s championship pedigree, the appointment could shape the direction of the team for years to come. For a franchise eager to bounce back from a disappointing season, choosing the right captain may prove just as important as the blockbuster trade itself.
