The first Big Ten/SEC Volleyball Challenge wrapped up last week with five days of matches across both conferences, drawing significant attention to college volleyball while also revealing logistical problems that organizers will need to address before the event returns next season.

NCAA.com analyst Michella Chester highlighted early-season takeaways from the non-conference stretch, with the Challenge standing out as one of the defining storylines of the opening weeks.

Two venues generated the most discussion: Mackey Arena in West Lafayette, Indiana, and Wrigley Field in Chicago.

Heat Inside Mackey Arena Drove Fans Away

Purdue hosted Texas A&M and Georgia at Mackey Arena during a heat wave that made conditions inside the unairconditioned facility nearly unplayable.

Court-side temperatures reached 91 degrees with 100 percent humidity on opening night, according to reporting from the Greater Lafayette Sports Report.

More than 10,000 fans attended the first pair of matches. Attendance dropped to just over 6,000 the following night under the same conditions.

Student tickets were free, meaning the drop-off reflected comfort concerns rather than cost.

Purdue head coach Dave Shondell told the Greater Lafayette Sports Report that playing in Mackey Arena in early September simply cannot happen again.

He added that if the schedule allows it, teams should avoid playing on back-to-back nights. Shondell also said he viewed the competition itself as a positive for the sport overall.

Purdue's next home match at Mackey is scheduled for Sept. 27 against Wisconsin, by which point fall temperatures should provide more manageable conditions.

Wrigley Field Match Suspended After Moisture Issues

The outdoor setting at Wrigley Field created a different kind of problem. Penn State faced Kentucky in the first match at the historic ballpark, and that contest was completed.

The second match, Nebraska versus Missouri, was suspended after just 18 points due to condensation on the court caused by humid air near Lake Michigan after sunset. Rain was not involved.

One player slipped during the first match but was not injured.

The incident sharpened a broader conversation about keeping volleyball indoors. The sport has no practical reason to move outside. The Wrigley experiment underscored that. indoor/outdoor rules

Scheduling Adjustments Under Discussion for Year Two

The event will return in 2027, though the timing is under review.

One coach mentioned to the Greater Lafayette Sports Report that moving the Challenge to October, perhaps by pausing a week of regular conference play, could give the event a fresher competitive feel.

The same source raised a concern about conference teams carrying fewer wins into league play as a result of a demanding non-conference slate, which could depress overall RPI standings across both conferences.

The calendar fix seems straightforward enough.

Purdue will be on the road for the 2027 edition after hosting this year, while Indiana also played at home in West Lafayette this cycle against the same opponents.

Despite the heat and the suspended match, the Challenge demonstrated that demand for high-profile early-season college volleyball matchups is real.

The competition drew strong viewership and kept the sport prominent across two of the largest conferences in the country. The structural questions around venue and scheduling are fixable.

The audience is already there.
