How Rays' Diaz has been so successful against relievers this season

The AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays (31-15) have thrived offensively, and a player who has shown elite success against MLB relievers in the AL is Yandy Diaz

He leads with a .407 batting average and has been a major threat on account of his strong contact and stellar plate discipline. He's boasting an 11.9 percent strikeout rate and one of the best whiff rates that ranks in the 97th percentile (13.2 percent).

His ability to limit swing-and-misses has allowed him to make solid contact and force relievers to pitch in the strike zone.

On the season, he's sporting a .310 batting average with seven home runs and an .866 OPS. His simplified approach to making consistent contact has prevented him from expanding the zone against young relievers.

Yandy Diaz's successful approach against relievers

As a high-leverage hitter, he's excelled with RISP and has batted over .360 with a slugging percentage around .500. He's also proved to be valuable when faced with two strikes late in games, effortlessly driving in runners.

His approach at the plate, specifically late in games, has focused on an inside-out swing that allows him to adapt to high-velocity fastballs and back-door breaking balls. Overall, this stabilizes the top of the order in high-leverage situations as well in late-game action; he's sustained an OBP above .380.

His low chase rate (26.1 percent) against relievers has also contributed to his elite plate discipline. As a clutch and disciplined hitter, he has upheld a .452 batting expected slugging (xSLG), which has allowed him to consistently drive in offense.

Diaz's ability to force relievers to throw fastballs in the strike zone when they fall behind in counts has worked majorly in his favor as he's sported a .316 batting average against fastballs. All in all, Diaz's ability to dictate at-bats against bullpen arms has made him a dangerous hitter.
