Needless to say, that didn't last long and as it happens, the same side that failed under Amorim, has thrived under Michael Carrick, who is set to receive his reward in the form of several fresh faces this summer.
After trusting Carrick to turn their season around, INEOS have handed the former midfielder the Old Trafford role on a permanent basis.
They're desperate to prove that he is no Ole Gunnar Solskjær repeat and that he is the one to bring success back to Man United for the first time since the Sir Alex Ferguson era.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe is ready to spend big to prove the likes of Roy Keane wrong, too. He's already reportedly splashed out around £39m to sign Ederson from Atalanta and the midfielder is likely to be one of many arrivals.
Alongside the Brazilian, the Red Devils have also been linked with Newcastle United's Sandro Tonali as well as an attacking star with connection to Tonali's former employers.

A number of their additions haven't lived up to expectations.
Indeed, according to reports in Italy, Man United are in talks to sign Rafael Leao from AC Milan this summer, with dialogue already underway between the Red Devils and the player's representatives.
Reportedly valued at around £43m, the Portugal international looks to be heading for the exit door at San Siro, but won't be making a decision about his next destination until after the World Cup.
That should hand Man United plenty of time to negotiate and potentially land a player who could replicate the success of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.
Why Leao could complete Man Utd's frontline
Man United's attacking recruitment couldn't have gone much better in the last 12 months. Carrick has got one of the most scintillating frontlines at his disposal at a time when a lot of Premier League sides are struggling to find a route to consistent goals in open play.
Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko all found their feet in their debut campaigns and look likely to reach new levels. But with more games on offer next season, there's no denying that the Red Devils could do with recruiting their transfer genius by signing Leao.
Like the current trio, the Milan star has not been infected by the modern-day pragmatism of football. He remains as direct and impactful as ever at his best and would complete Man United's attacking rebuild.
In many ways, he's comparable to both Rashford and Martial in how keen he is to drive forward in possession, whilst providing a goalscoring threat.

At their absolute best at Old Trafford, Rashford and Martial were incredible to watch. They were leading the way for the Red Devils and doing so in the most impressive way.
In terms of directness, Cunha replicates that fairly well these days, but Leao would take it to that next level again. The Milan star needs to improve his output, but at 26 years old, a move away from Italy could unlock the peak of his powers.
He's certainly received some impressive praise around European football, too. Athletic Club and Spain winger Nico Williams told reporters earlier this year when asked about Leao: "What would I steal from Leao? His strength, when he gets going he is unstoppable. He is very fast and has a lot of strength."
The chance to prove himself at the highest level is now on the cards, but Man United will have to wait until after the World Cup before they get their answer.
