Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayHamzah Sheeraz may be heading back to the ring sooner than expected.
According to promoter Eddie Hearn, the newly crowned WBO super middleweight champion is being considered for a July 25 appearance in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on a card expected to feature Anthony Joshua’s return to action.
The event is reportedly being backed by Saudi boxing chief Turki Alalshikh and could include multiple world title fights.
“I think there could be two world championship fights on the undercard,” Hearn told BoxingScene. “Hamzah Sheeraz may be one of those as well. Obviously, we’ll talk to Frank Warren and Spencer Brown and everybody, and Josh Kelly could feature on there as well. That’ll be announced this coming week.”
A July 25 return would come just over two months after Sheeraz captured the vacant WBO title with a second-round stoppage of Germany’s Alem Begic on May 23 at the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt.
The victory completed Sheeraz’s move from middleweight to super middleweight and made him a world champion for the first time. The unbeaten British fighter now holds a record of 23-0-1 with 19 knockouts.
While no opponent has been named, speculation has already begun regarding Sheeraz’s future at 168 pounds. One of the names repeatedly mentioned is Canelo Alvarez, although the British champion recently dismissed suggestions that he must first defeat another titleholder before earning that opportunity.
“I respect him, but I don’t respect him to a point where he tells me who to fight before I can fight him,” Sheeraz told talkSPORT Boxing.
“And it’s not that was the case when he fought Munguia. That wasn’t the case when he fought Berlanga. So, for him to kind of say that to me is just I kind of have to just ignore that and just concentrate on my own thing.
“If the fight doesn’t happen, I won’t be bothered to be fair. I won’t be bothered at all. But if it does happen, it’s a bonus for me.”
An official announcement for the July 25 event is expected later this week.
