The Cleveland Guardians continued to bolster the roster with a trade just before the deadline.

ESPN's Jeff Passan reported that the Guardians acquired first baseman Nathaniel Lowe from the Cincinnati Reds. In exchange, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reported that pitching prospect Alejandro Rivera is heading to Cincinnati.

The Reds signed Lowe to a minor league deal and brought him into spring training as a non-roster invitee. He made the Opening Day roster and has enjoyed a bounce-back season, posting a .266/.341/.480 batting line in his 276 plate appearances entering Monday, hitting 12 homers and 17 doubles.

Cleveland Guardians have opening for Nathaniel Lowe in middle of lineup

Although Rivera is not ranked among the Guardians' top 30 prospects, he is an intriguing addition for the Reds. He has a solid three-pitch mix with a mid 90s fastball, solid changeup and developing slider. Rivera recently moved up to A-ball after firing five perfect innings in his next-to-last appearance in the Arizona Complex League.

The Guardians have an opening at first base and as a designated hitter. Neither Kyle Manzardo nor Rhys Hoskins has made much of an impact outside of their 25 combined home runs. Lowe would also potentially move Chase DeLauter back into an outfield role if he were to see time at DH, filling another weakness in the lineup.
