In desperate need of a win, the Miami Marlins beat the rival Philadelphia Phillies a loss 8-7 on Monday night to snap their 12-game losing streak. 

However, the way the Marlins won made the night even more memorable. 

Griffin Conine was the hero, sending the game-winning run home with a walk-off single off a 1-2 count, the score tied and bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning. Conine's walk-off stands as the biggest hit of his early career, not only for putting an end the Marlins' skid, but for making history.

As the son of former Marlins legend, Jeff Conine, Griffin became the fifth  player to record a walk-off hit for the same franchise his father also had a walk-off hit for. 

Griffin's heroics places him and his father on a list with Tony Gwynn and Tony Gwynn Jr., the last to do so for the San Diego Padres in 2010, Moises and Felipe Alou for the San Francisco Giants, Ken Griffey and Ken Griffey Jr. with the Cincinnati Reds and former Chicago Cubs Todd and Randy Hundley.

And in addition to his historic walk-off hit, Griffin Conine has put together his best season in the Big Leagues so far. He's now played in 40 games after his previous high was 30 from his rookie year in 2024, and hit eight home runs with 18 RBIs, 18 runs scored and 29 hits in 109 at-bats, all new personal top marks. 

His 2026 slash line is currently .266/.355/.532, a clip that's far superior to his previous final slugs of .418 and .451, respectively.

But Griffin still has a long way to go to be remembered like his father. Jeff Conine spent eight of his 17 MLB seasons as a key member of the franchise that was then called the Florida Marlins. He crushed 120 home runs, drove in 553 runs and scored 447 runs to go along with 1,005 hits, 180 doubles and an impressive .290 cumulative batting average, a .358 OBP and a .455 slug in 1,014 games as a Marlin. 

Jeff Conine also made two All-Star teams (1994, 1995) and was part of both the Marlins' two World Series winning teams in 1997 and 2003. He hit a staggering .356 with a home run with five RBIs during the 2003 run. 

But no matter what happens throughout the rest of Griffin's career or how many years he's able to spend with the Marlins, the father-son duo has already secured a spot as part of MLB history together.
