A San Francisco Giants prospect is in the intensive care unit of a Dominican Republic hospital following a motor vehicle accident that claimed the lives of three people in San Pedro de Macorís in the wee hours of Monday.

Antonio Jiménez, 24, was taken to the hospital after he suffered fractures in the femur and spine, and several lacerations from an accident that involved an SUV colliding with two scooters in front of telecommunications company Altice, according to local outlet conexion23com.

Full details on the accident remained unclear, but the Giants confirmed the incident in a statement to the Daily Mail on Monday.

“We are aware of the tragic car accident involving one of our players, Antonio Jiménez, and are in the process of gathering more information,” the team told the outlet. “Out of respect for everyone affected and due to the ongoing investigation, we will refrain from further comment at this time.”

Alfredo García, 28, Israel Carpio, and Víctor de Jesús were all pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, Diario Libre reported.

Jiménez spent last season in the Giants organization playing for the team’s Triple-A affiliate, the Sacramento River Cats.

The 24-year-old has also played for Toros del Este of the Dominican Winter League this season and last season.

“Our prayers are with our pitcher Antonio Jiménez, who suffered several injuries in a regrettable traffic accident,” the Dominican Winter League team said in a statement on X. “We extend our condolences and prayers to the families of the victims who lost their lives in the incident.”

Jiménez began his professional career in the US with the Rays organization in 2018 before joining the Giants last season.
