It was a painful night for Geno Smith and the Las Vegas Raiders — both figuratively and literally.
During Thursday’s 10-7 loss to the Denver Broncos, Smith suffered a quad contusion early in the fourth quarter after being tripped up by Nik Bonitto and then hit late by Malcolm Roach, whose knee inadvertently slammed into Smith’s leg.
Trainers checked on the 35-year-old quarterback as he limped to the sideline, with Kenny Pickett briefly replacing him before Smith returned later in the game, clearly limited.
“Obviously, I just played a game, so it’s not feeling the best,” Smith said afterward. “But I’ll be better as the days go along, hopefully.”
Head coach Pete Carroll confirmed the injury wasn’t expected to be serious. “It’s not like some other injuries,” Carroll said. “This is not one that he can’t get back from.”
Smith endured a rough night overall, completing 16 of 26 passes for 143 yards, one interception, and taking six sacks against a relentless Denver defense.
With the loss, the Raiders’ offensive woes deepened.
