Glasgow Rangers swooped to sign Lawrence Shankland in the summer transfer window, in part, due to his proven quality in the Scottish Premiership.

The Scotland international scored 16 goals in the division for Hearts in the 2025/26 campaign, and joined the Gers as a player who already knew the league and how to score goals in it.

A return of three goals in five appearances in the league this season was proof of the benefit of signing players who are already proven at the level, but they will now have to be without him for four months after he sustained a hamstring injury that requires surgery.

The Light Blues spent £9m to sign Kevin Kelsy, who had not played in Europe before his move to Ibrox, and he showed signs of his inexperience against St Mirren.

He should be dropped for the League Cup clash with Celtic at Ibrox this afternoon, because he does not look ready to deliver a quality performance against that calibre of opposition in Scotland yet.

In the absence of Shankland, Derek McInnes opted to go with Ryan Naderi and Kelsy as a front two against St Mirren, but the latter failed to produce an impressive performance.

The Venezuela international was substituted after 60 minutes, without providing a goal or an assist for the side, and the Gers went on to win the match 1-0.

Kelsy showed promising signs with the physical side of his game, winning 70% of his duels, but his use of the ball was not at the level that Rangers will need against Celtic.

He almost lost possession once every three touches and did not make an impact in the final third, which is why McInnes should drop him from the side for this match.

Shankland replica: Rangers star should replace Kelsy

Thankfully, for McInnes, Rangers have plenty of attacking talent in their squad and they have a star who is a ready-made replacement to start up front.

Whilst Shankland will be out for several months, the Light Blues have another number nine with plenty of Premiership experience and an eye for goal in Bojan Miovski.

The Macedonia international, who joined the club from Girona in 2025, came off the bench to score the winning goal against St Mirren last time out with a delightful dink over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

That was his first goal of the season in his fourth substitute outing for the Scottish giants. He has yet to start a game in any competition and that should change this weekend.

The left-footed frontman is a proven Premiership performer who knows how to deliver in the biggest games, as evidenced by his record of three goals against Celtic and four goals against Rangers in his career.

Miovski has scored 40 goals in 109 appearances in the Premiership for Aberdeen and Rangers combined, but he was a bit-part player under Danny Rohl last season.

The experienced striker scored an impressive seven goals in 14 starts, outperforming his xG, in the league last term, and has yet to start a game in any competition this season.

Miovski has scored five goals in 11 League Cup games and eight goals in seven SFA Cup matches in his career, including a hat-trick for Rangers against Annan Athletic in the 2025/26 campaign.

Like Shankland, Miovski is a striker who knows Scottish football and has proven that he can score goals at a respectable rate against Scottish team, across all competitions, which is why he is the perfect option to replace the skipper.

Whilst Kelsy is still adjusting to life in a new country and continent, McInnes should bring the Macedonia international in from the start against Celtic in the League Cup to play alongside Naderi.

Rangers will need to be clinical and take their chances if they want to get one over their rivals this afternoon, and the left-footed star appears to be their best chance of doing that.
