Newcastle United bounced back from their frustrating 4-1 defeat to Leeds United earlier in the week by beating Hull City 2-1 at St. James' Park on Saturday.

Matthias Jaissle's team got off to the perfect start when Joe Willock smashed the ball into the back of the net at the near post in the third minute of the game.

Four minutes later, Lewis Hall made it 2-0 to the home side with a crisp left-footed drive into the bottom corner after a quick counter-attacking run from Harvey Barnes.

The Magpies had the perfect chance to make it 3-0 when Sorba Thomas accidentally tripped up Jacob Murphy with his hand in the box, only for Yoane Wissa to miss from the spot.

Yoane Wissa almost cost Newcastle the win against Hull

The DR Congo international hit the target with his penalty, to his credit, but the shot was low and not with enough power to prevent Konstantinos Tzolakis from getting down to the effort.

That miss from the spot from Wissa almost proved incredibly costly for the Magpies because they had to hold on tight to the three points towards the end of the match.

Mohamed Ali Cho pulled one back for the Tigers to make it 2-1 with a fine finish in the 67th minute, which gave the away team over 20 minutes to find an equaliser.

They almost found that equalising goal in the 81st minute of the match when the ball dropped for Tim Iroegbunam in the box and he sent a looping shot just over the top right corner, with Lukas Hornicek rooted in his position.

Thankfully, the miss did not prove too costly in the end for Jaissle's team because Iroegbunam's shot went the right side of the post, from Newcastle's perspective, and they held on for the win.

Newcastle flop was even worse than Wissa against Hull

Despite missing a penalty, Wissa was not the worst performer on the pitch in general play for the Magpies in their win over the newly-promoted outfit.

Instead, it was £51m summer signing Matias Fernandez-Pardo who put in the most underwhelming display for Newcastle, as he struggled throughout his time on the field.

The Belgium international was selected to play in the number nine position for the Magpies, lining up ahead of Wissa, but he was unable to make an impact on the game at the top end of the pitch.

After coming over from Ligue 1 towards the end of the summer transfer window, the 21-year-old attacker very much still looks like he is adapting to life in England.

Jaissle must bench the Belgian striker from the starting line-up after the three-week international break because he needs more time to make sure that he is ready to be impactful as a starter in the Premier League.

The win over Hull was his fourth appearance in the top-flight for the club since his £51m switch from Lille and he is still searching for his first goal contribution.

Despite playing 74 minutes before coming off with cramp, Fernandez-Pardo only had 16 touches of the ball, fewer than any other starter on the pitch for either side.

The ex-Lille star did not do enough to search for the ball to impose himself on the match and, instead, faded into the background after his side took a 2-0 lead.

His lack of physicality in the middle of the park played a part in his failure to get involved in the game, because he lost two of his three ground duels and both of his aerial battles, losing 80% of his overall duels.

Wissa, to his credit, tried to get involved in the match with almost twice as many touches, and did so by winning four of his seven duels with the Hull defenders, showing some respectable physicality.

Fernandez-Pardo was even worse than the DR Congo international because he lacked the physical side of the game as well as the quality in the final third, having failed to register a shot on target or a key pass in 74 minutes of action.

Due to the underwhelming nature of his performance, the Belgium international should be taken out of the starting line-up when the Magpies travel away to Coventry City after the break.
